Check Your Doctors Before Choosing a Health Plan

You find your doctor in a plan’s online directory, then discover the listed office is across town—or that the search showed a different network. Provider networks can be specific to a plan and location, so a quick name search is not the same as confirming access.

Search the Exact Plan

Use the insurer’s directory for the particular plan you are considering, not just the company’s general provider search. Check the clinician’s full name, specialty, office address, and network status. If you receive care at a hospital or clinic, check that location too; a facility and the professionals working there may have separate network participation.

Confirm With Both Sides

Call the insurer and ask whether the provider is in network for the exact plan and service area. Then call the provider’s office and confirm they accept that specific plan, since an office may recognize the insurer but not participate in every network it offers. Note the date and the names or reference numbers associated with the calls.

Check Before You Enroll

Directories and provider contracts can change, so verify again if the decision depends on keeping a particular doctor. Ask about referral requirements and whether the plan treats nearby facilities or specialists differently. Once you have confirmed the details, compare network access alongside premiums and cost-sharing rather than treating it as a separate afterthought.
